A place where light stops moving. Set this vase where the afternoon comes in and the spiked tips catch and scatter it: the kind of quiet drama that works harder than anything hung on a wall.
Murano glass in the rostrato form, each spike drawn and applied by hand and the surface between them smooth and water-clear. The wide base tapers upward to an open mouth 13 cm across, wide enough for full-stemmed flowers or a single branch. The glass has weight to it: 2.8 kg of hand-blown clear crystal that sits without moving. Rostrato, meaning beaked or spiked, is among the most technically demanding decorative forms Murano glassmakers produce, requiring each thorn to be pulled from molten glass and fixed before the piece cools.
A rostrato vase in hand-blown Murano glass, made on the island in the 1940s. Rostrato belongs to Murano’s mid-century decorative tradition, a form held in permanent museum collections, including the Museo del Vetro in Venice.
