A pair of earthenware plates that carry a century of Italian ceramic tradition quietly onto a contemporary table.
Thick-bodied stoneware with a beige glaze aged into a fine web of crazing. The crazing comes from the glaze contracting over decades; it is not damage. Age has left each piece its own marbling, and no two are identical. Smooth to the touch despite the visual texture. Each plate measures 24.5 cm across, stamped underneath by Società Ceramica Italiana.
The house was founded at Laveno on Lake Maggiore and became one of Italy’s principal earthenware producers, supplying households and restaurants into the twentieth century. The undermark, introduced in 1883, dates these plates to somewhere between 1900 and 1940.
