A weight on the desk or the low table — catch-all for matches, a stray cufflink, the last cigarette of an evening, as much sculpture as vessel.
Solid brass, cast as a square with a striped relief worked across the surface. The ridges break the light into parallel lines and give the hand something to read. Substantial in the palm at 700 grams. The four rests are cut clean into the corners.
Brutalist brass of this kind came out of the Italian design workshops of the 1970s, where the decade’s taste for raw, architectural metalwork reached the table. Part of a tuxedo set — the coordinated barware and smoking accessories a host kept for the evening.
