A carving set for the centre of the table — brought out for the roast, the bird, the joint that gets carved in front of everyone.
Two pieces in silver plate: a long carving knife and a matching fork. The knife runs to 29 cm, the fork to 22.5 cm, weighted to sit well in the hand for the work of carving. A set made to be used at the head of the table.
Silver-plate carving sets of this kind were a fixture of the European table through the twentieth century, kept for Sundays and occasions. The maker is unmarked, in the manner of much mid-range plate produced for everyday households rather than the cabinet.
